Alone With God

Not a sound. No distant cars, trains, or sirens. Not a noise from man nor beast. It is so quiet that your own heartbeat sounds deafening!

Where is the quietest place you’ve ever been?

For me, it is this valley a few miles east of Study Butte, Texas on the extreme western edge of Big Bend National Park. For several years, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to co-sponsor several school trips to this part of our great state. In this particular valley which is known for its Indian pictographs, as part of our regular routine, we would have the students isolate themselves from one another and sit as still and quiet as they could for 5-10 minutes. We encouraged them to simply listen to the quietness and appreciate its awesome quality.

Utter silence.

In Mark 1:35, the Bible says, “And early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus arose, went out and departed to a lonely place, and was praying there.”

How often do we go out intentionally, all alone, to a lonely and quiet place to be with our heavenly Father like Jesus did? Jesus made this a regular habit. Away from the distractions, away from other people, away from the world. Just quality time spent with God in quiet conversation.

I don’t know about you, but for me this does not happen often enough.

I encourage us all to follow Christ’s example to go out, be alone, be still, and talk with God in quiet isolation.

He is there.

Please join me in a moment of silence....
