What Our Lives Say

Saw a little post today that said "Never argue with an idiot. People watching won't be able to tell the difference."

If we want people to see God in us, it's important that they can distinguish us from people who know not God. The reasons are obvious as they must see why we preach a new life in Christ as opposed to the old one that is worldly and full of sin.

It has nothing to do with arrogance, or us "thinking" we are better than anybody else. None of that matters. What matters is whether or not we are walking in step with Christ, or are we just like the world who cares nothing about Him? Only we and God know, but our example toward those who might be seeking Christ will be tarnished severely if people can't tell that we are any different, if we don't practice what we preach. The old saying "I'd rather see a sermon any day than hear one" carries a lot of logic.

Jesus tells us in Matthew to "let [y]our light shine before others, that they may see [y]our good deeds and glorify [y]our Father in heaven. (Matt 5:16). What glory will God get, if after they look at us, they determine that we are just see another 'joe' who lives and acts like everybody else, saying one thing and doing another? Will they have any desire to hear anything we have to say about living for God, much less desire to change their lives?

Our actions speak volumes. If what is in our heart doesn't translate to our actions, one of them is a fraud, and it doesn't take long to figure out which one. May we examine our hearts and work to align them with God's will, and then align our actions with our hearts in our best efforts to live for Him.
