Doing Good As We Go Along
How do you spend your days? I mean, when you get to the end of the day, beside work or school, and all the hassles of life, what did you spend your day doing?
We, myself included, get so caught up in just taking care of our jobs, and paying the bills and mowing the lawn and doing the laundry and house cleaning, and chasing after all the kid's activities and all that stuff that is on our to-do list each day, that often there is little time left to actually "do" anything.
But as we go through these activities, as we take care of day to day responsibilities, in the midst of being very busy, can we also serve our fellow man, and thus God through them? Can we affect the lives of others, and can we accomplish good deeds alongside of everything else?
We often sing a song, an old song that I love, called 'A Beautiful Life'. Here are the verses:
Each day I'll do a golden deed,
by helping those who are in need.
My life on earth is but a span,
and so I'll do the best I can.
The only life that will endure.
Is one that's kind and good and pure.
And so for God I'll take my stand,
Each day I'll lend a helping hand.
While going down life's weary road,
I'll try to lift some travelers load.
I'll try to turn the night to day,
Make flowers bloom along the way.
(Songwriters: Rea Garvey / Sacha Skarbek)
You know, if we can manage to do golden deeds occasionally, be kind and good toward others, lend a hand and try to lift them up where we can and show love to them, we've actually done a lot, and not only is someone else better off because of it, certainly we are too!
