Rescue God's Name
Maybe you saw this short video this week, firefighters rescuing the American flag from a flagpole moments from it being consumed by flames. Now before I say anything at all, I want everyone to know I honor our flag. The older I get, the more I understand what it represents. It bothers me to see it burned, desecrated, or abused. It sometimes brings tears to my eyes to see it draped over the casket of men and women who have given their lives for what it represents. And while I disagree with those who have a disdain for it, I love their souls, and will allow them to have an opinion that disagrees with mine. I do wish their understanding was different though.
I feel the same way with the Word of God. When people destroy, especially with malicious intent, Bibles in a public display of their disapproval, it hurts me. It's not the vinyl covered cardboard and pieces of paper, but rather what it represents. Those words on those pages are the very inspired words of God, a God who loves the very souls of the people burning His word, desiring for them to understand it and repent. Burning a Bible does no more to lessen the words of God, than burning a flag does to remove decades upon decades of liberty and freedom and the appreciation we have in our hearts for those patriots who gave all.
I also feel the same about the name of God. Scripture tells us to hold it sacred, that it is holy. It is not to be used in a common way anytime, and certainly not as an adjective in every other sentence. When we hear "God", I firmly believe it should have an affect on us like no other name, we should immediately have the reverence due God in our hearts, and that's getting harder and harder to do when people abuse God's name so frequently. Where we have the ability to do something, like around our co-workers and family members, let us rescue the name of God. Let us try and keep it from being destroyed any further. Let us make an effort to protect it and help it retain the reverent nature it so wholly and holy deserves.
