The Do-Over
The summer of my 3rd grade year, we moved from Stephenville to Abilene. I soon realized that I left all things familiar, including the friends I knew, and would have to make new friends. Our family moved onto a street that for the most part was made up of retired couples, with the exception of 4 families with kids. Of those families, there were three boys that were close enough in age that we all quickly became friends and started playing together. Our after school and weekend activities consisted of baseball and football, and were always played in our front yards. One of the boys that I would play with was named Ziggy. He had a great concept in sports, although it wasn't necessarily fair or liked by the rest of us when we played. Ziggy was great at calling for a “do-over” if he didn't like the pass or make the run quite like he thought he should have he would always ask for a chance to do it again. For some strange reason, we always granted him the “do-over” and to this day, I am not exactly sure why because that was not following the rules of the game. Most of the time, when the “do-over” was granted he would always make a better play than what he did the previous time correcting his mistakes and scoring.
When we take a look back at our lives, there are probably plenty of times that come to mind, some of us so many we would be unable to count, where we wished we could call a “do-over”. If only we were afforded an opportunity to stop life, hold up our ball and say, “Can I get a ‘do-over”? But that is not how life works, is it? We have to live with the consequences of the choices that we make, whether they are good or bad. The great thing about becoming a Christian is that we do get the opportunity for that “do-over”. We get the opportunity for all of our past sins and mistakes to be erased and start over as a new person.
2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” Through the blood of Jesus Christ we are afforded the opportunity of a “do-over”! The old has gone and the new has come! Do you need a “do-over”?
