"TO BE OLD AND WISE WE MUST FIRST BE YOUNG AND STUPID"
This quotation caught my eye because most of the time, it's sad but very true. Without a doubt, I can say it's true of me with regards to several times and situations in my life. Another old quotation says 'experience is the best teacher'. True!
Our kids have to learn about hot by touching, not simply by being told "don't touch that, it's hot!". We sometimes learn many of life's lessons the hard way. In fact, God tells us that some hardships are necessary in life for us to grow.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 NIV
It's very sad when we don't learn and mature in such situations. They are great opportunities for spiritual growth. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just have sufficient faith, knowledge and perseverance to not require trials to mature us? If we could just get it right, first time, every time, we could save ourselves a lot of time, energy, grief and sorrow.
There is another quote I'm sure you have heard, 'the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results'. When it comes to spiritual matters, let's not act with insanity, but rather learn, grow, and mature. If we are getting older and still acting "young and stupid", it's probably time to take stock, and add some gray hair and wrinkles.
